Description
Herod is jilted by the Kings of the East, outshone by stars, outperformed by legions of angels and brought to his knees by a tiny Baby born in a lowly manger.
Herod, the loud talker, he who killed his own family so no one could take his position and power away, was perhaps one of the most feared and dangerous people in his age.
But offsetting this, Herod was definitely one of the most fearful man in the entire Bible, this exacerbated by the fact that Herod’s antagonist was a tiny, defenseless little baby born in poverty to a couple from back in the hills in a nondescript little town.
This short poem focuses on how Herod, with all his spies, soldiers and connections must have heard the celebration on the birth of Jesus, (Verse 1). And he definitely heard the comments made by the rank and file people, (Verse 2), and how this must have driven him wild since he couldn’t, or didn’t, do anything about it other than bluster, “We are the King, the only King!” And as Verse3 states, Herod had to know this baby would be victorious!

Their foul noise disturbs our rest.
Shepherds, angels now act blessed,
And my heart’s full of emptiness.
We have heard the things they’re saying:
