Description
Ever been in a situation when someone who seemed to care about you, did you a favour . . . .
And then this person talked to everyone he met about what he had done? Suddenly that favour was a shameful thing because confidence had been broken. Showing Christian kindness is not doing something for someone and then telling the world what you have done. Kindness requires compassion, benevolence, thoughtfulness, meaning that no one except God knows what has happened.

Joanne: Hey guys, how are you? Did you hear the news?
Beth: News? What news?
Joanne: About Benji Newsham.
Virginia: Benji? What did loud talkin’ Benji do this time?
Joanne: Don’t talk like that about Benji, he is a hero almost.
Beth: A hero? Benji? The same Benji that we all know and appreciate so much?
Joanne: Yes, Benji Newsham. Benji just gave his allowance to Mary Thomas so she could buy a school book.
Beth & Virginia together: Benji?
Joanne: Yep.
Beth: How do you know this?
Joanne: I was told by very reputable sources.
Virginia: Benji?
Joanne: I don’t know why you guys are reacting like that, maybe Benji has done some things that weren’t so great, but I think what Benji did for Mary was awful nice!
Beth: Well, actually I do have to admit that was a really nice thing for Benji to do.
Virginia: I guess I agree, but just one question. Who was this “reputable source” that told you about this?
Joanne: Well, if you must know, it was Benji that told me. But I talked to Mary after and she admitted that Benji had given her the money. Point is that you have to admit that Benji is doing what Jesus tells us to do by being kind and giving to others.
Beth: Well, Joanne, I think it is very nice that Benji gave Mary money for her book. That was a nice thing for him to do. But remember in our Bible study when we talked about Christian kindness? The pastor used the word “benevolence.”
Joanne: Yes, I remember that. Not sure what it means, exactly, but I do remember that.
Virginia: I remember that the pastor said that true kindness and benevolence was giving to others when no one, other than God, will ever know who the gift came from.
Joanne: Oh, yeh, I remember that too. So, you mean that what Benji did wasn’t an act of kindness?
Beth: We aren’t saying that Benji wasn’t showing kindness, Joanne, all we are saying is that maybe Benji’s kindness wasn’t exactly the kindness Jesus would have shown.
