Theme:       Interactive Christmas drama of the historical background and the birth of Jesus, with optional songs, (or songs of your choice), along with optional Human Video (mime to music). This script was written in such a way as to enable little children in the audience /congregation to be involved, with or without adults, but would be best suited to complete families and all participating in actions, speech and songs.

Spotlights should be used to direct attention and for effect

 

Sound:       sound enhancement as available
Songs are suggested in the script, they are optional and can be replaced with your preferred songs. Could be one verse or complete song, just keep in mind there will be young children in the audience, don’t overdo.
Words for the songs projected on screen(s)

 

Costumes:    standard except for Mary, Joseph, angels, shepherds and Wise Men who would best, but not necessarily, be in traditional costume

 

Props:        gifts for Wise Men
Have small pieces of cloth to hand out to each person as they come into the sanctuary, or have them laying on the seats in advance.
Candles (electronic) for optional close

 

Special Instructions:
We recommend a small group of expressive actors/dancers/miming persons who will VERY QUITELY AND NON-INTRUSIVELY enhance and augment the emotions in the narrative and the words in the songs. These persons will freeze in standing position when not involved. DON’T OVERDO ACTIONS!
(Optionally) end drama with a candle lighting ceremony and “Silent Night” sung.
IMPORTANT! Leader(s) need to ensure that in the interactivity with motions and sounds that this remains an upbeat but serious presentation and does not turn into a comedy!

N1:          The people of Israel were sad.

 

Leader:       Why were the people sad?

 

All:          Why were the people sad?

 

N2:          They had no leader to lead them.

 

N1:          And this made them very sad!

 

Leader, unhappy:
Very sad!

 

All, unhappy:  Very sad!

 

Leader:       Crying!

 

All:          Crying!

 

N2:          The people wondered . . . . Does God not care about us?

 

Leader:       Does God not care?

 

All:          Does God not care?

Leader conducts the song for all to sing

 

Leader:       Cares for birds, not us?

 

All:          Cares for birds, not us?

 

N1:          The people of the nation Israel were slaves, in a foreign land.

 

Song:        “Let My People Go,” one line and echo

 

Leader:       Not fair!

 

All:          Not fair!

 

Leader:       No one can rescue us?

 

All:          No one can rescue us?

 

Leader:       God rescue us!

 

All:          God rescue us!

 

N2:          Many years before God promised to send a Messiah, someone who would lead the Israelites to freedom.

 

Leader:       God send a Messiah!

 

All:          God send a Messiah!

 

N1:          But the years went by and there was no Messiah, and no freedom.

 

Leader:       We are suffering!

 

All:          We are suffering!

 

Leader:       Help us God!

 

All:          Help us God!

 

N2:          But still the people believed God would do as he promised.
So the people waited and hoped.

 

Song:        “Let My People Go”

 

Leader:       We are hoping!

 

All:          We are hoping!

 

Leader:       Waiting and hoping!

 

All:          Waiting and hoping!

 

N1:          God prepared a leader, Moses. Moses led the people out of slavery.
Now the people were free! . . . Surely Moses was the promised Messiah!

 

Leader:       God has sent the Messiah!
claps hands in applause

 

All:          God has sent the Messiah!
clap hands in applause

 

N2:          But Moses died.
He was not the Messiah.
And the people were sad!

 

Leader:       Very sad.

 

All:          Very sad.

 

N2:          And soon the people were captured by the Roman soldiers.
Still no Messiah!
And again the people were very sad.

 

Mary comes on stage

 

Leader:       Very, very sad!

 

All:          Very, very sad!

 

Angel comes on stage

 

N1:          One day an angel came to talk to a young girl in Nazareth.
The girl’s name was Mary.
Mary was a fine girl who loved God.

 

N2:          The angel told Mary that she would have a baby.
