Sample of script:

Norman is happily working around on stage, dusting, cleaning up, whistling, Tony very tentatively comes on stage

Norman: Morning young man, welcome to Bethel Industries, how can we help you?

Tony: I am Tony Davis, Mr. Rogers hired me, today is my first day on the job.

Norman, shakes Tony’s hand: Welcome aboard Tony, good to know you! I am Norman Samson, Building Maintenance Supervisor. Now fact is that’s just a snazzy name for janitor is what. Mind you, I love this job, great place to work, you’ll love it too is my belief! Where you gonna be working Tony?

Tony: Market Penetration Analyst.

Norman: Sounds like some sort of fancy-schmantzy high techie thing, likely computers and all.

Tony: Yes, using computer models to determine customer buying patterns.

Norman: Never could figure out how you young people make heads nor tails out of them computers, but more power to you is all I say. Why my grandson, and him not yet three years old, should see him messin’ around on the computer, like to blows my mind is what.

Tony: Guess it’s just what you grow up being comfortable with sir.

Norman: “Sir”! I like that; good manners never do go out of style son.Tony: I am excited about coming to work here, I have heard lots of good things. And the Boss seems like a really outstanding man.

Norman: Oh, you know the Boss, do you Tony?

Tony: Well, like I said, Mr. Rogers himself, he hired me.

Norman: Well, Mr. Rogers, he is in charge here on the production floor, but like I expect he told you, it’s the Father who is in charge.

Tony: Yes, come to think of it Mr. Rogers did say something about he was “minding his Father’s small business”.

Norman, chuckling: I can for sure just hear Mr. Ronald saying exactly that!

Tony: So I assume this is a family business then?

Norman: We are just a big old family of families Tony, that’s what makes it work, seems like.

Tony: “A family of families”?

Norman: First off, we are all headed in one direction, seems like. Loyal to the big Boss, you might say. Plus lots of folks who work here are related.

Tony: That can be good . . . or bad.

Norman: For a fact it can be. Way I see it, depends on the Guy on top, and on the ones He puts in charge to run the business. Now I am going to tell you that our Mister Ronald, he is not only loyal to the Boss, he is a family man through and through. Mister Ronald’s wife Christine she’s his right hand man, he always says. Why even his mom and Christine’s mom they have a big part to play in the success of Bethel Industries.

Tony: Sounds like a closely knit organization.

Norman: For sure close knit, but goes way beyond that. Folks here they care for each other, care for folks in the neighbourhood, care about integrity. Mister Ronald he has a big old sign on his wall, says, “Integrity is not a ninety percent thing, not a ninety-five percent thing, either you have it of you don’t!”

Tony: Peter Scotese, he said that, and it is very true.

Norman: For a fact I don’t know who this Peter Scotese fella might be, but for sure it is true. Bethel Industries forever has been based on Christian principles. Just like Mister Ronald told you, he sees it that all of us, our job is just minding the Father’s small business.

Becky comes on stage, speaks to Norman

Becky: Morning Norman. Just wanted to let you know if you see a young fellow coming in, I am expecting a new employee, name of Tony Davis . . .

Norman: Here he be, Becky, we have been chatting here, getting to know each other.

Becky: Oh good morning Tony, nice to see you bright and early. My name is Becky Douglas; I am Finance Director here at Bethel Industries. I do have to tell you that there is no one better than Mr. Norman Samson to give you a solid grounding in what makes Bethel Industries tick! Why Norman Samson likely knows far more about the running of this place than any of us in senior management here.

Tony: It was a pleasure talking with you Mr. Samson.

Norman: Don’t need to call me mister, everybody here knows I am just plain old Norman!

Becky: No where better than right here on the production floor to start your orientation Tony. Fact is Bethel Industries had its humble beginnings in the basement of our founder. From that inauspicious beginning Bethel has grown into the substantial firm that it is today.

Norman: Right from the get-go Bethel has been blessed to have Mister Ronald as the man in charge. And always Godly principles have set the course for all we do.

Tony: A question about location. On my way here this morning I couldn’t help but notice that Bethel Industries is located in, what shall I say, an economically depressed part of town. Isn’t that a safety and security concern?

Becky: Certainly, Tony, safety and security are valid concerns for any organization. But so is leaving our mark on the area in which we are located. It is part of the mandate of Bethel Industries. Mister Ronald and all of the staff here at Bethel are committed to impacting the situations and the lives of those in our neighbourhood, urging them to try out what we have to offer, get to know the Boss on a personal level.

Norman: Most folks who spend their days at Bethel Industries live right here in the neighbourhood. If we were in some fancy-schmantzy part of town why these same folks wouldn’t have an opportunity to be a part of Bethel Industries.

Tony: Well, sir, that may be noble, but if I may say so, the person most needy of a job isn’t always the best person for that job.

Wanda and Lorna come on stage

Wanda: What for are you guys standing around here, you know very well that morning devotions start . . . (looks at watch) . . . in less than five minutes.

Tony: Devotions? You mean like . . . religious devotions?

Lorna: Religious? No one religious here at Bethel Industries, we just praise the Lord is all. (chuckles)

Tony: Well, I am not really comfortable with religious ceremony; I mean I am religious as the next guy but . . .

Wanda: Don’t you find it boring being religious? Who are you son?

Becky: Sorry, I should have introduced you. This here is Tony Davis, he is starting in our Marketing Division, today is his first day. These fine ladies are Lorna and Wanda from Customer Support.

Lorna, shakes hands with Tony: Good having you here, welcome! You just come on up and join in on our devotions, get to know all the others here.

Tony: Well, thanks for the invitation but I would like to get started, perhaps if my supervisor, I believe his name is Mister Jackson, if he could show me around I could . . . .

Becky: Fact is, Mister Georgie is leading the devotions this morning. So come along then, meet up with Mister Georgie there.

Tony: Are you telling me that work comes to a stop while employees attend . . . . devotions?

Wanda: Let me tell you something young man, devotions is where everything starts, where we get on track with the big Boss, get His instruction, His guidance, His direction . . .

Lorna: We do so, and sometimes His correction too, for a fact!

Tony: So the big Boss attends the devotions as well?

Norman: Son, you are gonna find that the Boss, He is in all we do here at Bethel Industries.

Lorna, chuckling: Even sometimes when we maybe want to think He is not listening in.

Tony: Well, I guess that it might not look good to the Boss if I am not there on my first day at work, guess I had better make an appearance anyhow.

Norman: You want some free advice from the janitor, let me tell you something. The Boss He loves for to see all of us in devotions, don’t you ever forget that. But if all you are there for is to make an appearance I say best you stay away. Boss He isn’t keen on folks showing up at devotions for to make an appearance, warm a chair. I can guarantee that the Boss don’t hand out points for attendance!

Wanda: Devotions starts in like . . . (looks at watch) . . . two minutes ago. I do detest being late! Come on now, let’s move along!

Depending on stage size and configuration this can be a move to another part of the stage, or it can be a new scene
Norman, Tony, Becky, Wanda and Laura come on stage where Georgie and others are already seated, Georgie at the front of the room.

Georgie: Come on in folks, lots of chairs for all!

Tony tries to find a chair at the back

Georgie: No room at the back son, lots right up here at the front. You better learn quick what I always say, late comers get to sit in the seats of influence at the front!

All chuckle, Tony reluctantly sits at the front with the other late comers

Becky: This here is Tony Davis, new to us just this morning. He is our new Market Penetration Analyst.

Georgie: Welcome to Bethel Industries Tony! Mister Ronald mentioned that you would be along.
